Constant thinking, constant debating, constant playing
From 22 to 30 August 2026, Theater Basel will be taking the pulse of democracy. From early morning until midnight, with few breaks. Because the questions are pressing and complex: Why are authoritarian systems so popular? What do we want to save? What is democracy worth to us? Which democratic concepts do we stand for? And who exactly do we mean by ‘we’?
Together with young people from Basel who attend different schools and have varied life stories, we’re turning the Kleine Bühne into a democracy lab. In the spotlight, we’ll build huge explanatory models, engage in heated debates about citizens’ rights, and step out of our own bubbles through dance.
On 29 August, together with Cerca and Gemeingut Boden, we’re organising a school class workshop on the topic of land and property: Who owns what, why, and what does this have to do with our democracy? The workshops are aimed at pupils aged 14 and over.
