Unwired Currents - Imagining Technologies Otherwise is a six-month online fellowship an a free, public online programme taking place from May to October 2025. It provides a platform for designers, scientists, artists, programmers and educators to explore alternative technologies and narratives that go beyond the dominant narratives.
Rethinking technology: beyond the myth of neutrality
In Western societies, the myth has become entrenched that machines and technical systems are neutral, objective tools that equate technological progress with social progress. This prevailing discourse promotes a universalist vision of ‘the future’ that supports modernist ideals and solution-orientated approaches to urgent, complex social problems. As a result, many technological developments not only fail to address, but often exacerbate, inequalities rooted in ableism, classism, cis-hetero patriarchy and racism.
The open programme Unwired Currents and the Fellowship bring together diverse perspectives from fields ranging from anthropology, history and philosophy to art, design, programming and activism to explore technologies beyond dominant narratives and engage with indigenous knowledge, ancestral ways of making and being, and community-based practices.Overall, Unwired Currents aims to diversify technological narratives and develop more inclusive approaches to solving societal problems. Through interdisciplinary exchange and the support of creative projects, the programme aims to open up new perspectives on the role of technology in society.
