Digital transformation of a dance festival

Since 2021, we have been accompanying and advising the dance festival ZÜRICH TANZT on the topic of digitality. Digital and hybrid measures are intended to make the festival more accessible and dance and dance makers more visible.

Due to the pandemic in 2021, we were suddenly forced to show and experience culture only via screens. ZÜRICH TANZT was also affected by this and the Dezentrum was asked to help with the short-term transformation into the digital.

When physical events were held again, the question of what should remain of the digital came up. Together we put the lessons learned to the test: what digital tools and events offer added value even after the pandemic? How can digitality be used to support the mission of ZÜRICH TANZT, to make dance tangible and dance makers more visible? How do we create more inclusion with digital possibilities of participation?

In several scenario workshops, we developed digital future scenarios together with the ZÜRICH TANZT team, dance professionals and experts. With future experiments, we tested assumptions and refined the digital approaches during the festival.

Digital means can help make culture more accessible, inclusive and diverse. The key point, however, is that digital should always be a means and not a purpose.
